| We are encouraging older Scouts to consider the option of continuing their Scouting as a Young Leader, whether or not they are moving on to an Explorer Scout Unit.
Young people between the ages of 14 and 18 who wish to continue their Scouting by working mostly with one of the younger sections can do so by becoming a Young Leader.
Those that wish to join an Explorer Unit can also become a young leader if they wish too. Explorer Scouts should be encouraged to complete the service element of the D OF E Award with a Scout Group. Training is a necessary part of becoming a Young Leader, and the City will be providing this bi-annually. | | | Young Leaders |
| This again will be held as part of the events in the City Centre on Saturday 24th April. We have listened to your feedback from last year and are improving the format, particularly for the renewal of the Promise. | | | |
| As mentioned in the Walesby section, this is going ahead at the end of May. Details will be sent to all Groups within the next couple of weeks. I would very much like all Groups to attend. | | | |
| All Scouts Groups across the Region are being assessed using a common format and scoring process. Most Groups in the City have now been assessed, and improvement plans agreed to develop the Groups on a continuous basis towards the required standards. The District Team are reviewing the results of all the assessments to identify common areas for support. | | | |
| I am pleased to announce that FREE camping is available to all Sections and Groups within the City of Nottingham Scouts for up to 9 nights a year, at our District camp site – Walesby. The 2010 dates are Friday 28th – Sunday 30th June, Friday 28th May to Monday 31st May as part of District Camp, Friday 5th – Sunday 7th November, plus one weekend per Section per Group at a weekend of your choice, outside peak periods (other bank holidays).
Outside of the above agreement, the camp fees applicable to the City are 20% off published prices starting at only £2.56 per night. | | | web site |
| Have you thought about doing a District role?
The District Team are appointed to support the Sections and Groups across the City. We have split the City into the funding Area's recognised by the City Council, with each Area comprising two or three Wards. An ADC(Group Support) is appointed to support the adults working as volunteers within these areas. Our current ADC(Group Support) cover two to three Area's each, which is far from ideal. We are looking to recruit other experienced adults to provide support across the City.
An alternative approach would be to recruit adults from Sections to provide sectional support within the Area's. Most of our ADC's have another role within a Group as well, and provide support to other Groups within the Area there own Group is based. If you are interested in joining the District Team, then please contact the District Commissioner.
| I would like to take the opportunity of Christmas to say a big thank you to all the adults working within Scouting in the City of Nottingham.
Since my appointment as District Commissioner in June, I have been really impressed with the progress the City has made. Our membership is on the increase, we have opened one new Scout Group, and are in the process of opening two more, and have plans to continue with the opening of new Groups and Sections.
We have also taken many opportunities to get Scouting seen, by both the general public, and in improving relationships with the City Council.
I am proud of the many Leaders who are helping run Scouting away from there own Group.
I wish you all a merry christmas, and a succesful 2010.

| Every Scout Group across the East Midlands will be working with this new tool over the coming months.
The County and District Commissioners across Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire have agreed to assessments of every Group using this tool. The aim is to provide a simple tool to help local Scouting grow, by helping members to assess areas for improvement, and to agree the actions they will take.It is intended that all Scout Groups across the City will be assessed between now and Christmas. The ADC(Group Support) for each area will be facilitating the review, with support from the Regional Development Team. It is intended that all leaders, and where practical members of Group Executives be involved in both the assessment, and agreeing the actions.

| Chris Flewitt was appointed District Commissioner to the City of Nottingham Scouts on 1st June 2009. Last night, 24th June, the District held its AGM at the 7th Nottingham Scout HQ in Wollaton. Following the formal business of the meeting, Chris presented his vision for the future for City Scouts, and his new District support team.
There are 3 main areas of support:
a team with a focus on ensuring as many young people as possible get the opportunity to try new activities, with a focus on outdoor adventure a team with a focus on supporting our Group leadership teams, providing encouragement, supporting growth initiatives, ensuring our leaders have the opportunity to express their ideas, inspiration and challenges a focus on improving relationships with the local community, in working with other organisations in the community, and creating more opportunities for our young people. Communication also needs to improve, with less reliance on email, and more reliance on talking to each other, both internally, and externally.

| Several Scout Groups in the City of Nottinham contributed to the Sherwood Festival held at Woodthorpe Park on Saturday 20th June, which attracted well over 5000 people throughout the day.
The Scouting presence included a climbing wall and a monkey-bridge, both of which attracted vast numbers of eager young people keen to take on the challenge activity each provided.
Many young people were keen to find out more about the exciting challenges offered by Scout groups throughout the City and in the neighbouring County and the Public Relations tent handed out hundreds of leaflets to prospective youth members and volunteer adult helpers.
Following the event we have already "signed up" two new leaders and seen new faces at several Groups in the area across all sections.
Scouts also did a brisk trade in hotdogs, burgers and hot peas, keeping a willing band of leaders and parent supporters busy throughout the day and the Tombola almost ran out of prizes!
Well over 100 potted plants were also sold to raise funds to support young people who have the joined City Scout contingent which will be visiting the Kandersteg World Scout Centre for a week's camp in August 2010.
A camping display provided by Millets - the camping and outdoor specialists - also attracted considerable interest. They ran a tent packing competition through out the day, with the winner taking home a "Pop-Up" tent as a prize.
We are grateful to members of the public for their support on the day, and hope to see you all at next year's Sherwood Festival when we hope to have the added attraction of archery for all to participate in!
