Introduction

So what’s happening in 2012, well;- we shall all be celebrating the Queens Diamond Jubilee, the Olympic games are taking place in London, the European Cup is being played for in Poland and the Ukraine; and of course the really big one is that, the City of Nottingham Scout District is celebrating it’s Centenary.

Is the centenary important? Is it helpful to look back? Should we even bother?

A steering Group has been set up to specifically look at next year’s celebrations and has decided that it should be a reflection of the past and an encouragement for the future.

There will be some looking back into the past and that’s a testament to our founder, Baden Powell and all those who had the foresight to follow his lead and understand the value based programme that Scouting offered. Not only was that true then but is still true today and so we shall be celebrating the past but also have an eye to the future and be looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead in the 21st Century.

Earlier in the year we asked for design ideas for a badge and logo along with a strap line. There were lots of brilliant and witty strap lines and these will be used in the forthcoming Centenary booklet. There is a winning Badge design but this will be kept under wraps for a while longer.

We asked for a logo and we have one in the form of an outline of a Lion, (the market square lions which are a recognizable local icon). The winning strap line will be incorporated into the Logo and will help to brand the celebrations and will appear on all district correspondence and Centenary event literature. Both the Logo and strap line will be unveiled shortly.

Most Leaders and Supporters have had the initial outline of events which are being planned for next year.

Jon Bugg asked for volunteers for the various Event Leadership teams, and we have had some success in finding people who wish to lead and assist in running an Centenary event but there are still some events which lack enthusiastic people to lead them. Do not be surprised if we start to approach people directly.

The planned community event in October will take the form of a District sponsored walk and we are looking for suggestions as to which Children’s Charity we should support. Please let a member of the steering group have your suggestions. (steering group are Chris Flewitt, Jon Bugg and Tony Ross)

We intend that the primary method of communication will be on the city website and we make no apologies for that. The City has a really good website and we need to make the information accessessable to as many leaders and supporters as we can. For the foreseeable future when there is an update an email will go out to all people on the districts database with a link to the city website, it should then be a simple matter just to click on the link. I would suggest that all Group Scout Leaders ensure that someone (if it’s not them) is able to access the web site and to make sure that the contacts email address is on the District Database. It may be helpful just to pass on the email within their own group to ensure that everyone gets the link to the City website.

Summer Camp Details Released

As part of the city of Nottingham districts 2012 celebrations we will be holding a summer camp between the 4th and the 11th of August 2012. This camp will be held at great tower scout activity centre in the heart of the lake district. Situated 5 miles outside Bowness on Windermere and a 10 minute walk from the lake Windermere itself the site is perfectly positioned to hold a number of activities. The site is situated in woodlands and has a lot of character as an unspoilt area for group camping.

Great Tower

Activities projected include climbing, canoeing, archery, rifles and orienteering - all with fully trained leaders/instructors. The cost is £185 per person including all activities, food, transport and camp fees. A deposit of £20 will be needed by the end of October and further instalments on 14/12/11, 14/3/12 and 20/6/12 - we can run a camp bank to accept weekly payments if you wish. It promises to be a great week of adventure and fun, but places are limited so we must know as soon as possible who is interested.

Big Day in the Market Square

The date for our big promotional event in the Old Market Square, Nottingham has been confirmed as Saturday 9th June 2012.

All City Scout Groups and Units are being asked to volunteer to run an activity in the Market Square on this date. The following is a list of suggested activities, and we would like each Group to either edit the record and add their Scout Group next to the activity, or add another activity for consideration.

User names and passwords have previously been distributed. If you have difficulty editing the record, please email us
